Shelter for women with disability

We are implementing a Shelter for Women with Disability under the National Urban Livelihood Mission with the support of the Greater Chennai Corporation since April 2016. At a time more than 35 women with all disabilities from all over Tamilnadu stay here and are linked to various services.

We are on the Governing Body of the SIP Memorial Home for Children with HIV and we have been supporting the Home since it was founded in 2005.

support group for women with HIV

We have been conducting a support group for Women with HIV since 2002. In the beginning the support groups were held every month. Now the frequency of the meetings has reduced to a bi-annual feature. 

para sports

We support training and participation of persons with disability in Para Sports both para-athletics and team events such as Sitting Cricket and Wheelchair Basketball. This support is offered both for inmates of the Shelter as well as persons from the community.

trainings

Over the years we have conducted several capacity building programs, facilitated participatory and interactive sessions, developed guidelines and training modules on a wide range of topics including health services delivery, child rights, program management, gender, sex and sexuality, disability rights, livelihood and entrepreneurship. We do this for our partners or for our own beneficiaries based on need. 

Threaducation

The Threaducation Centre is an activity based strategy that is being set-up in the Shelter in order to enable women to embark on a journey of creativity.which will also give them the skills to make a livelihood for themselves.

Employment

We see creating jobs, and linking our clients to employment as a key aspect of living independently and with dignity. We continue to not only place men/women with disability, trans-women, youth from marginalized backgrounds in jobs but also advocate for reasonable accommodation in their workplace and mentor them until it is needed. 

advocacy

A team consisting several members of the Disability Rights Alliance met with the Union Minister of Finance Shri. Arun Jaitley and advocated for the roll-back of GST on all disability aids and alliances. We have been pushing for various reforms at the state, national and international levelsover the years on issues of access to health, education and livelihood. 

marriages for women with disability

We have facilitated and arranged the marriages of women with disability and women with HIV over the past several years in accordance with their wishes. We recognize the sexual and reproductive rights of all women irrespective of ability and status and we respect their subscription to the cultural norm of marriage is they so desire.
